Interior Designer
Profile
“I love reading my clients, learning what is going to help them live fuller, work faster, realize a dream. It's about giving them the proper tools, the optimal setting.”
Steven Gambrel of S.R. Gambrel Inc. creates interiors that are simultaneously familiar yet unexpected. The firm works within the parameters that the function of any space—whether it is a sleek, polished apartment or a relaxed country house—should feel like it comes from a local vernacular and yet creates an environment that’s particular to the client and the place.
S.R. Gambrel Inc., reflects this theory in its totality. For his own offices, Gambrel transformed a former West Village cabaret into a studio, where the firm works on architectural and interior design projects as well as product and furnishing lines. Customized and unique elements are a key part of the shared aesthetic. S.R. Gambrel culls visual inspiration from the classics and adds a unique perspective to make designs relevant for a modern clientele. The result is a timeless look; fresh and unexpected and designed to improve with age. S.R. Gambrel provides a multidisciplinary approach to interior design and architectural detail, focusing on the details such as carefully proportioned millwork, custom hardware, authentic finishes, and an unexpected color story often richly saturated to contrast with muted palettes. A careful attention to scale.
S.R. Gambrel, Inc. was founded in 1996, and promptly attracted a devoted and diverse clientele of informed design aficionados. Current projects are located in Manhattan, Long Island, Zurich and Hong Kong. In addition to these residential projects, the firm is in the process of designing two commercial spaces, the Huffington Post Media Group and offices for a financial services firm. Gambrel was recently featured as the sole designer for the Town and Country Showhouse at the Setai Fifth Avenue Hotel in Manhattan.
Gambrel’s work is consistently featured in the world’s leading publications, including World of Interiors, Town and Country, House Beautiful, the New York Times, and Elle Décor. In 2010, Steven was named to Elle Décor’s “A List”; chosen as one of 25 “authentic tastemakers in the U.S. whose rooms reflect… style, serious comfort, snappy ideas and whose innovative approach to the art of decoration will be studied for generations.”
S.R. Gambrel is developing a custom lighting line with the Urban Electric Company and has established a partnership with Waterworks known as Grove Brickworks. Abrams will publish Gambrel’s inaugural book on lifestyle and design in the spring of 2012. Gambrel was trained as an architect at the University of Virginia.
